A little while back we wrote a review (readable here) about Paper Minecraft, a 2D Minecraft game playable on your browser for free. Although it's really laggy, the game has many cool features that we didn't cover in our last review.
If you don't want to read the last review, to sum it up, you can use A and D to move, plus space or W to jump. Click to place or use, and click and hold to break a block.
The game is procedurally generated, and has features that include trees, villages, caves, lakes, and gravel and clay deposits. The vilages have villagers, although there isn't any trading. The villages have two different types of houses, plus wells. The village chests don't spawn with anything in them, but you can steal their beds. Another thing to note is that village doors don't work and zombies can walk through and stab you in your sleep. Regular doors work, so you don't need to worry about that bug if you craft your doors.
Speaking of crafting, the crafting mechanic is really, just really impressive. The crafting is entirely complete (for 2014, when it was made), and you can craft anything from doors to armor to weapons to more crafting tables.
The game has two ores, iron and diamond. They can both be used to make tools, weapons and armor.
The also has farming. You can farm wheat, which is used to make bread. There are also a number of animals you can kill, including chickens, cows, and pigs.
One of the best features of this game is the save game option, which can be used if you press O. When you press it, the game creates a giant string of numbers. These numbers are kind of like a Minecraft seed: except the "seed" includes all of the contributions you've made to the world, such as houses you've built, your location, your inventory, blocks you've broken, holes you've dug. It saves everything. That is potentially the coolest thing I've ever seen anyone do in Scratch. Be careful though, the string of numbers is long. I had played in a game for about an hour, built a house, dug a hole, chopped down some trees... and the string of letters had a whopping 9,166 characters in it. It filled three pages on a google doc in size 11. So make sure you have somewhere where you can paste your save that has enough room for your save.
